GSEHD Remains in Top 25 Graduate Schools of Education

The Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD) was ranked 24th out of 249 graduate schools of education surveyed in the latest "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue of U.S. News & World Report, which hit newsstands on April 4, 2005.

This is the second consecutive year that a GSEHD has received this ranking by the prestigious publication and, therefore, the school maintains its position among the top 25 graduate schools of education in the country.  GSEHD is one of only two graduate schools throughout The George Washington University to be ranked in the top 25 overall in its respective category.  GW's Law School was ranked 20th out of 79 accredited law schools.

"GSEHD is proud to once again be listed as one of the top 25 schools of education in the country.  Our placement is indicative of our reputation as a provider of high quality graduate studies and the commitment of the faculty to ensuring that our students are prepared for successful careers in the fields of education and human development," said Mary Hatwood Futrell, dean of GSEHD.

The graduate school continues to rate exceedingly high among its peers.  It was ranked 10th among private schools of education and 4th among private, accredited institutions.  In terms of research, the school was ranked 5th overall in research dollars per faculty member; 2nd in research dollars per faculty member among private institutions; and 15th in the nation in total funded research.

GSEHD is one of two schools of education in the Washington metropolitan area to be ranked in the top 50.  The annual rankings also show that the average test scores of students admitted to GSEHD have risen (the report only measures the scores of students pursuing a doctoral degree) and indicate that the school's rate of selectivity has increased since last year.

U.S. News has been publishing "America's Best Graduate Schools" on an annual basis since 1990.  According to the magazine, schools are measured using objective data (obtained by U.S. News directly from colleges and universities) and peer-generated, reputation-based ratings.  Graduate programs at 249 schools of education granting doctoral degrees were surveyed.

CHAOS '04 Research Conference

The fifth annual research conference on human and organizational studies was a great success, with about 120 people attending the presentations.  This conference celebrated sixteen years of learning for the Center and the ELP.

Conference highlights included a keynote guest speaker, Mr. William Spenla, Manager of Leadership Learning and Development from DuPont Corporation.  Mr. Spenla addressed the conference attendees on leadership development in a globalizing firm.  Additionally, the conference included over 30 presentations in the form of symposia, panels, and concurrent sessions.  Among the presentations were 15 from ELP alumni, many of whom discussed aspects of their dissertation findings. Topics of the sessions provided insights in such areas as change, leadership, culture, research methods, teams, adult learning and organization theory.  Thanks to our guest speakers and all of the volunteers who assisted with registration and check-in.

Review presentation topics from the Fifth Annual Research Conference  on Human and Organizational Studies held on November 7 and November 8, 2004, at George Washington University.
